Welcome week

In my last post I mentioned that I'd gotten the results I needed to study Classics at Manchester. Well, I've now been at uni for just over two weeks (hence the absence on here for a bit, it's been a busy time), so it's probably high time I posted my first update on studying Classics at Manchester. So, what's it been like?
My first week in Manchester was welcome week, which helps to ease new students such as myself into university life (albeit, a slightly surreal version of it). Already I've seen some rather drunk friends, a few serious injuries, and more bars than you could shake a fasces at. It's certainly been a good time, but it's also been incredibly exhausting. I've also joined a fair number of societies, but the ones which are actually relevant here are the Classics and Ancient History Society and the Re-enactment Society (and Pirate society, naturally) - all of which I'll certainly be talking more about at some point in the future. As part of my welcome week, there was a Classical languages introductory day, which was probably the toughest day of the week. In the morning there was a diagnostic assessment (read as 'extremely tough exam') to see if I could study advanced Latin - I can - although the afternoon was far more enjoyable and was spent looking at some fascinating Roman inscriptions.

In the second week, university life has properly started. Naturally it's a bit more subdued than welcome week was (lectures have seen to that), but that's no bad thing as we all need the rest. Speaking of lectures, this semester I'll be studying Advanced Latin, Intensive Greek and the Odyssey, and then I'll be replacing the Odyssey with Catullus and picking up Roman history in the second semester. It's certainly a case of being thrown in the deep end in some of the courses (especially the Greek), but I feel like I'm starting to improve a great deal, and it's rewarding that the work I've put in is paying off so far.

Even though I've been quiet on here for a bit, I do have some articles coming up soon, including one on Cicero's (supposed) views on university, and the next part of the conquest of Britain series - so keep an eye out for those. In the meantime, thank you for reading, and feel free to leave a comment below, in particular if you've just found the blog from the link I posted on the society's Facebook page. Welcome to Qui Bono!
